Facilitating the future: Providence Swedish First Hill expanding for caregivers and the community
We want Providence Swedish to be the best workplace in the Northwest, and as part of that effort, we strive to create world-class facilities in which our caregivers can proudly practice medicine, provide care and conduct research. At the bustling Providence Swedish First Hill campus in downtown Seattle, we’re in the early stages of a major expansion project that will provide current and future caregivers a more modern, efficient place to work and will better serve our growing metropolis. Here’s a look at what’s to come.
Preparing for growth
Already the largest hospital in the state and a coveted workplace, the Providence Swedish First Hill campus will ultimately double in size from 1.5 million to 3.15 million square feet. The first phase is construction of the $1.3-billion North Tower, a 12-story building that’s tentatively opening in 2027 and will include:
- A larger, more efficient emergency department with 31 rooms, including eight rooms designed to better serve our behavioral health population.
- A new main surgery: 24 advanced operating suites, with state-of-the-art technology to support the evolving delivery of surgical services.
- 72 acuity-adaptable intensive care unit (ICU) beds to ensure flexibility.
- New centralized imaging facilities.
- Supportive, healing spaces for patients, caregivers and visitors.
- Connection to an existing skybridge.
- Underground parking, retail areas and green spaces, which will offer respite and convenience for all who work and visit.
- Shell space on several floors for future expansion of bed floors or procedural space.
The next phase is construction of another tower called Block 95, which will feature outpatient spaces and medical offices.
Building a sustainable environment
The benefits of modernizing the Providence Swedish First Hill campus extend beyond patients and caregivers to the planet. Says Dr. Elizabeth Wako, president and CEO of Swedish Health Services, “We’re proud to be taking the steps necessary to decarbonize, improve energy efficiency and minimize waste. This project is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s a re-imagination that will allow us to deliver on our promise to our patients, and a demonstration of our commitment to the people of Seattle and the broader Puget Sound region.”
