Thrive as a radiologic technologist at Providence Swedish
Where you work in medical imaging matters to your well-being and career trajectory. And while we may be biased, we think Providence Swedish is the best place to perform X-ray, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, fluoroscopy or ultrasound.
Diagnostic Imaging Manager Rey says one reason techs love working here is that we help them build on the investment they made when they obtained their rad tech certification.

We know how much effort and time you put into earning that title, and we work hard to create an environment where our technologists can thrive both personally and professionally.
Here’s how we do that.
Exposure to cutting-edge radiologic technologies and nationally recognized excellence
Swedish pioneered radiologic care in the Puget Sound when, in 1932, Dr. Nils Johanson opened the first center west of the Mississippi River to offer high-energy radiation therapy for cancer.
That innovative spirit lives on today across Providence Swedish radiology departments, which hold accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR), the gold standard for quality in imaging, and are staffed by board-certified radiologists and certified technologists who provide a full range of diagnostic and interventional radiology services, using advanced technology from GE, Siemens, Phillips and others.
At St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, where Rey works, they use two Siemens Go CT scanners, one 120-slice for interventional studies and one 64-slice for other uses, both of which are less than two years old. And his team is upgrading its dual C-arm IR room to support thrombectomies, a critical neurovascular surgery. “We are so happy to bring it back to the community,” says Rey.

Our imaging technologists are exposed to a wide variety of cutting-edge tools and procedures. “Thrombectomies are very involved where the technologists actually spend time on the table assisting the radiologist or vascular surgeon as they perform the case. So that’s really cool.”
Customized, flexible professional development paths for radiology techs

Before joining Providence Swedish, Rey spent 25 years in the United States Army, training in X-ray, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, and nuclear medicine—skills that still serve him well in his civilian career with us.
He likes that the growth mindset prevalent in the military is a focus at Providence Swedish and believes that every tech should be encouraged to grow in their career, saying, “For me, that’s one of the best parts of working here—to allow that growth for our caregivers. We invest in our people so they can expand their skill sets and gain confidence, not just in one area, but in multiple areas of care to deliver the highest level of service to our patients.”
While growth sometimes means adopting a new modality or moving into leadership, Rey says it can mean unexpected paths if you approach a situation with creativity. He shares, “One of our MRI technologists said, ‘Hey, I feel that I know so much about MRI that I have a ceiling. I can’t go any further in my position.’ We worked together to identify a new career path for her. We found that there was a need for a Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer, MRSO, in our hospital. We got her the MRSO certification to be able to grow into a new role. That’s one example of how we’re committed to investing in our technologists with continuous learning and supporting advanced certifications.”
What’s more, after recent union negotiations, technologists now receive additional pay for advanced certifications. “That’s actually now a part of our contract,” Rey explains.
A “we’re in it together” culture with multidisciplinary teams and diverse patient populations
Another defining feature of medical imaging at Providence Swedish is our strong emphasis on collaboration. “We’re like a big family,” says Rey. “It’s a lot of teamwork, not just between the leaders and not only within imaging, but between all the departments that we take care of, from the ED to the OR and multiple outpatient services.” He says that by building mutual respect and shared purpose, everyone contributes to delivering the highest quality care to patients. That means treating every patient with the same care they’d show their own family and friends.

Rey discusses the vast contributions of radiologic technologists throughout the care continuum with a potential patient care scenario. “It can start as somebody coming into the emergency room and needing an X-ray, where we detect something, prompting a CT to find out what’s going on. Maybe we need an MRI so we can see soft tissue better and find that the tissue looks a little bit nefarious. We might then do a nuclear medicine study to see the metabolic comparison of the tissue. And if it’s determined the person has cancer, we put a port in them in interventional radiology so they can start getting their therapy. So, our team is there every single step of the way, interacting with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best outcome.”
According to Rey, effective collaboration is made possible because we’re grounded in a shared mission to serve all, which extends to each other.
We believe that caring for our community begins with caring for the people that make it possible—our caregivers.
And we serve all patients with the same compassion, dignity and respect. “There’s a reason why our emergency and operating rooms are busy: It’s because we’re not going to turn anybody away,” says Rey. “We serve a diverse community of people, and they know that we’re going to take care of them.”
