Following is a look at one nurse’s experience as a Neuro-ICU nurse at Swedish Cherry Hill, what roles and specialties we’re hiring for and what it’s like to work with us.

Neuro-ICU nursing: one caregiver’s experience

Tarunjit (TJ) is a Neuro-ICU Nurse at Swedish Cherry Hill. According to him, a shift in Neuro-ICU starts with getting two room assignments and connecting with the nurses who were previously with the patients. Together, they conduct neuro exams and check drips and vitals to see if there’s any change. Then, after checking the charts and making plans for the shift, TJ factors in the families.

“I look through the patients’ family information to see if I need to call someone or if I need to update someone about the situation, or if I should be expecting them to call.”

After a bedside report with the doctor, the caregiver continues to monitor vitals and the patients’ comfort levels and cleanliness. “Patients are often intubated, so it’s important to make sure to arrange the pillows so they don’t have any pressure injuries. Small stuff like that is really important; otherwise, it can have big consequences.”

TJ says working in Neuro Critical Care requires both emotional intelligence and emotional strength because Neuro-ICU patients take longer to heal, and it can be frustrating not to see immediate results.

“Sometimes we take care of people whose personality has changed, and they don’t recognize anything or anyone—or they’re just not there anymore. You have to remember that you’re responsible, and you can make a big difference in the patient’s life, and the patient’s family’s life—and in your life as well.”

Other times, it’s easier to know you made a difference, such as when a patient wakes up from a coma. “They wake up and you can say, ‘Wow! Hey! Hello! My name’s TJ, and I’ve been taking care of you for eleven hours and now you can actually know who I am!’ And that’s amazing. It’s just a feeling that doesn’t go away.”
